You can sit any Cambridge IELTS Reading paper here free. Forty questions in 60 minutes, three sections, no extra time to transfer answers — and it is marked against the book's own answer key the moment you hand in. 30 correct out of 40 is an indicative band 7. in Academic, and a band 6 in General Training: the two are scored on different scales, which is why the same raw score is not the same band.

What the Reading test asks of you

Academic — three long passages

Taken from books, journals and newspapers, written for a general audience rather than a specialist one. The last passage is usually the most argumentative and the most expensive to leave unfinished.

General Training — everyday and workplace texts

Notices, advertisements and company handbooks first, then a longer piece of general interest. Scored on a different scale from Academic for the same forty questions.

The 60 minutes include transferring answers

There is no extra time at the end. On the computer-delivered test you answer on screen as you go, which is the version practised here.

What a Reading score is worth

Forty questions, one mark each. IELTS publishes four indicative points per module and describes them as indicative: 30 correct out of 40 is an indicative band 7. in Academic. General Training needs more correct answers for the same band, because its texts are less demanding.
