What the Speaking test asks of you

Part 1 — Introduction and interview (4–5 minutes)

Familiar questions about yourself: where you live, your work or study, your free time. The examiner is checking that you can speak naturally about ordinary things, not that you have an interesting life.

Part 2 — The long turn (3–4 minutes)

A task card, one minute to prepare with paper and pencil, then one to two minutes speaking without interruption. Running out before the minute is up costs more marks than a few hesitations do.

Part 3 — Discussion (4–5 minutes)

Abstract questions connected to the Part 2 topic. This is where the higher bands are decided: you are asked to speculate, compare and justify, not to recall.

How a Speaking band is worked out

There is no raw score to convert. An examiner — or our AI, against the same published descriptors — gives a band for each of the four criteria, and the four are averaged to the nearest half band. That is why a report here names all four: a 7 built on a 5 for pronunciation is a different problem from a 7 built on a 5 for grammar, and only one of them is fixed by speaking more.
