IELTS Academic Writing Task 1: overview আসলে কী

Official IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 sample pack-এ ইট কীভাবে বানানো হয় তার একটা উত্তর আছে, যার examiner comment সাফ ভাষায় বলছে এতে "no clear overview"। ওই task-এ উত্তরটা Band 7 পেয়েছে।

overview বাদ পড়লে Band 5-এ আটকে যাবেন — এটাই যদি আপনাকে শেখানো হয়ে থাকে, তাহলে ওই script-টা ওই শেখানোটার জন্যই একটা সমস্যা।

নিচে কোটেশনের ভেতরে যা আছে, তার পুরোটা এসেছে "Updated May 2023" ছাপ মারা band descriptor, Key Assessment Criteria আর examiner comment সহ ২০২৩ সালের sample task থেকে। কোটেশন মানে official wording। যেখানে নিজের মত বলছি, সেখানে বলে দিচ্ছি যে ওটা আমার মত।

দুটো official descriptor sheet চালু আছে, আর দুটোয় এক কথা লেখা নেই

চালু sheet-টা নয় পৃষ্ঠার, নাম Cambridge University Press & Assessment, প্রতিটি পৃষ্ঠায় "Updated May 2023" ছাপ মারা। অন্যটা এখনো search-এ উপরে ওঠে, আর তার নিচে লেখা "Cambridge English Language Assessment" — এই নামটা ২০২১-এর আগেই বাতিল হয়ে গেছে। overview নিয়ে দুটো কাগজ এক কথা বলে না, আর অনলাইনের পরামর্শ এত এলোমেলো হওয়ার কারণও এটাই।

বাতিল sheet-এ Band 5-এ লেখা ছিল "recounts detail mechanically with no clear overview"। May 2023-এর Band 5-এ লেখা "The recounting of detail is mainly mechanical. There may be no data to support the description", সঙ্গে "There may be a tendency to focus on details (without referring to the bigger picture)"। অর্থাৎ খুঁটিনাটিতে ডুবে গিয়ে বড় ছবিটা না দেখানোর প্রবণতা। Band 5 থেকে overview শব্দটাই পুরোপুরি তুলে দেওয়া হয়েছে।

Band 7-এর লাইনটাও Cambridge নতুন করে লিখেছে, আর সেই কাটাকুটিতে একটা শব্দ হারিয়ে গেছে। আগে ছিল "Presents a clear overview of main trends, differences or stages"। এখন "It presents a clear overview, the data are appropriately categorised, and main trends or differences are identified."। stages নেই। অথচ process diagram এখনো প্রশ্নপত্রে আছে — কথাটা মাথায় রাখুন, একটু পরেই লাগবে।

এখনকার descriptor-এ "overview" শব্দটা ঠিক দুবার আছে: Band 7 আর Band 6। Band 8, Band 9 বা Band 5-এ নেই, Key Assessment Criteria-তে একবারও নেই। যে গাইড আপনাকে Band 5-এর ওই লাইনটা দেখাচ্ছে, সে তিন বছর আগে বদলে ফেলা একটা কাগজ থেকে পড়ে শোনাচ্ছে।

IELTS Academic Writing Task 1-এ overview জিনিসটা কী

সবচেয়ে কাজের যে সংজ্ঞাটা পাওয়া যায়, সেটা আসলে সংজ্ঞাই নয়। একজন examiner নিজে হাতে একটা overview লিখে দেখিয়ে দিয়েছেন, ব্যস। radio আর television-এর শ্রোতা-দর্শক নিয়ে একটা line graph, তার Band 6 script-এ মন্তব্য এসেছে: "In order to gain a higher mark for content, the candidate would be expected to summarise the most important features of the graph in an overview, for example, 'audiences for radio peak in the morning, and for TV, in the evening'."

১৩টা শব্দ, কোনো সংখ্যা নেই, দুটো সময়, একটা ক্রিয়া। যে লোকটা graph-টা কোনোদিন দেখেনি, সে এখন জানে graph-টা কী নিয়ে ছিল — কাজটা তো এটুকুই।

Official IELTS teacher article দৈর্ঘ্য বেঁধে দিয়েছে "one or two sentences"-এ, আর সঙ্গে বলেছে "No Conclusion is needed for Task 1"। IDP তালিকা করে দিয়েছে overview-তে কীসের সারাংশ থাকবে: "Trends, Changes, Developments, Stages, Noticeable features", আর DON'T-এর ঘরে লিখেছে: "Include data or figures in your overview."

আমি candidate-দের বলি overview-টা মুখে পড়ে পরীক্ষা করে দেখতে। chart দেখেনি এমন কাউকে শুনিয়ে দিন। সে যদি শুনে শুধু এটুকু ফেরত দিতে পারে যে "কিছু একটা বেড়েছে", তাহলে আপনি একটা রেখার আকৃতি বর্ণনা করেছেন, তথ্য নয়।

overview ছাড়া Task 1-এ band 7 পাওয়া যায় কি

এখানেই স্লোগান আর কাগজ আলাদা হয়ে যায়। প্রতিটি descriptor পৃষ্ঠার মাথায় ছাপা আছে: "A script must fully fit the positive features of the descriptor at a particular level. Bolded text indicates negative features that will limit a rating."

দুই জায়গাতেই overview একটা positive feature, আর overview ছাড়া কোনো script এই দুটোর কোনোটাতেই পুরোপুরি খাপ খায় না। কেউ নিয়ম করে কোথাও এটা লিখে দেয়নি; overview না থাকলে Task Achievement এই কারণেই সীমিত হয়ে যায়। আর Task Achievement চারটি criterion-এর একটি: "The criteria are weighted equally and the score on the task is the average." তাই Task Achievement আটকে গেলে task score-এর মোটামুটি এক-চতুর্থাংশে হেরফের হয়। এই সংখ্যাটা IELTS কোথাও ছাপে না; "weighted equally" কথাটার অঙ্ক কষলে এটাই দাঁড়ায়। বাকি তিন-চতুর্থাংশ আগের মতোই চলতে থাকে।

এবার ফিরি ইটের কাছে। ওই Band 7 process script নিয়ে মন্তব্য: "The process itself is adequately described, although some irrelevant information is included and there is no clear overview." অথচ Task Achievement কোন জিনিসটা টেনে নিচে নামিয়েছে, examiner তার নাম আলাদা করে বলেছেন: "This test taker uses an inappropriate format at times (e.g. the letter-style opening and personal comments) and this limits the band for Task Achievement."

এখান থেকে বেশি কিছু টেনে নেওয়ার আগে দুটো সতর্কতা, আমার নিজের জন্যও। sample script-এ যে band দেওয়া আছে সেটা পুরো task-এর band, Task Achievement-এর আলাদা sub-score নয় — ওটা কখনো প্রকাশ করা হয় না। আর পুরো pack নিয়ে IELTS নিজেই শর্ত জুড়ে দিয়েছে: এই script-গুলো "should not be regarded as definitive examples of any particular band score."। সব মিলিয়ে যে দাবিটা শেষমেশ টেকে, সেটা ছোট আর মেপে বলা: examiner-রা যে উত্তরটাকে clear overview-হীন বলেছেন, সেটাই task-এ Band 7 পেয়েছে।

আমার মত, আর এটা নিছকই আমার মত। Task Achievement-এর সবচেয়ে সস্তা নম্বরটা হলো overview, আর ওটা কোনো গেট নয়। এই পার্থক্যটা আপনার ২০ মিনিট খরচের ধরন বদলে দেয়। যিনি ওটাকে গেট ভাবেন, তিনি সারাংশের বাক্যটা বারবার কেটে লেখেন, body-তে পৌঁছান সময় প্রায় শেষ করে, আর figure বসানোর জায়গা আর থাকে না — সেই ক্ষতিটা অনেক বড়।

overview কোথায় বসবে, কতটুকু হবে, শেষে দেওয়া চলে কি না

introduction-এর ঠিক পরে দ্বিতীয় প্যারাগ্রাফ — এটা প্রচলিত রীতি, নিয়ম নয়। Official teacher article-এ আছে: "if the test taker does not include the overview in the introduction, they can include it at the end of the response." দৈর্ঘ্য "one or two sentences", আর কোনো official সূত্র শব্দসংখ্যা বেঁধে দেয়নি। নিচের Band 8.5-এর মন্তব্যটা overview-টাকে ফাঁপা বলে দোষ দিয়েছে, ছোট বলে নয় — দোষ দুটো আলাদা।

IELTS Writing Task 1-এ কয়টা প্যারাগ্রাফ লিখবেন

প্যারাগ্রাফের সংখ্যা official কোথাও বাঁধা নেই। ওই একই Band 7 ইটের script-এর examiner মন্তব্যে প্যারাগ্রাফ প্রসঙ্গটা এসেছে cohesion-এর আলোচনার ভেতরে — "paragraphing would have helped convey a clearer description of the stages" — প্যারাগ্রাফ ভাগ করলে ধাপগুলো আরো পরিষ্কার হতো। প্যারাগ্রাফ ওখানেই ধরা পড়ে, Task Achievement-এ নয়।

আমি চারটা শেখাই, আর এটা নিছক আমার শেখানো: visual-টা কী দেখাচ্ছে, overview, আর দুটো body। পরিষ্কার overview সহ পাঁচ প্যারাগ্রাফের উত্তর overview ছাড়া চার প্যারাগ্রাফের উত্তরকে হারিয়ে দেবে।

সংখ্যা overview-তে নয়, body-তে

IDP-র "don't include data or figures" কথাটা overview-এর জন্য। ওটা ছড়িয়ে গিয়ে সাধারণ পরামর্শ হয়ে গেছে, আর সেখানে ওটা দামি ভুল। Band 6-এ শর্ত "Information is appropriately selected and supported using figures/data"; Band 5-এ সতর্কবার্তা "There may be no data to support the description"। একটা Band 5 script ঠিক এই কারণেই নম্বর হারিয়েছে: "There is a good attempt to describe the overall trends but the content would have been greatly improved if the candidate had included some reference to the figures given on the graph. Without these, the reader is lacking some important information."

overview-তে trend, তার নিচে সংখ্যা। তবে সংখ্যার কারণ ব্যাখ্যা করতে যাবেন না। Academic Task 1-এর সংজ্ঞাই হলো "basically an information-transfer task, which relates narrowly to the factual content of a diagram, graph, table, chart, map or other visual input, not to speculative explanations that lie outside the given data."। "this may be because" দিয়ে শুরু করা বাক্যগুলো বিনা পয়সার খাটুনি।

process diagram বা map-এর overview কীভাবে লিখবেন

Band 7-এর descriptor চাইছে "main trends or differences"। ইটের ভাটায় ওর কোনোটাই নেই, ১৯৮৫ সালে একটা car park পেয়ে যাওয়া গ্রামেও নেই। অথচ প্রশ্নপত্রের নির্দেশনা ছবি বদলালেও বদলায় না। process task-এ chart-এর মতো হুবহু একই কথা: "Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant."

সমাধানটা আছে একটা Band 8.5 process script-এর examiner মন্তব্যে: "There is an overview in the first paragraph indicating that there are 'seven consecutive steps' however for the highest score, a fuller overview would be needed, to summarise those key stages, for example; extracting the clay, then shaping, drying and delivering the bricks."

candidate ধাপ গুনেছিলেন। examiner চেয়েছিলেন ধাপগুলোর নাম — কাঁচামাল থেকে তৈরি জিনিস পর্যন্ত একটাই সুতোয় গাঁথা।

Map-এর বেলায় আমি সীমাটা স্বীকার করে নিই। Official sample set-এ আছে একটা bar chart, একটা line graph আর একটা process diagram। কোনো map task নেই, তাই প্রকাশিত কোনো কাগজে map-এর overview নিয়ে examiner-এর একটা মন্তব্যও নেই। কেউ যদি আপনাকে map-এর ফর্মুলা ধরিয়ে দিয়ে বলে ওটা official, তার পেছনে কিছু নেই।

Map-এ আমি সেই বাক্যটা লিখব যেটা বলে জায়গাটার সামগ্রিকভাবে কী হয়েছে। একটা গ্রাম পর্যটন শহর হয়ে গেছে। একটা শিল্প-এলাকা সাফ করে বাড়িঘর উঠেছে। এরপর body-তে আসবে আলাদা আলাদা পরিবর্তনগুলো — কোনটা কোথায় হয়েছে। কেউ যদি বলে IELTS এটাই চায়, সে আসলে আমাকেই উদ্ধৃত করছে।

Task Achievement আর Task Response এক criterion নয়

mark sheet-এ দুটোর ঘর এক, কিন্তু দুটো মাপে দুই জিনিস। এই কারণেই যাঁরা আগে Task 2 তৈরি করেছেন, তাঁরা bar chart-এর সামনে বসে ব্যাখ্যা করতে শুরু করেন রেখাটা কেন নামল।

Key Assessment Criteria এখানে Task Achievement কী কী মাপে তার পাঁচটার নাম করেছে, তার মধ্যে আছে "selecting key features of the information" আর "presenting the response in an appropriate format"। ওই পাঁচটার একটাতেও overview শব্দটা নেই — overview-কে গোটা criterion ভেবে বসার আগে এটা জেনে রাখা ভালো।

ওজনের প্রশ্নে প্রকাশিত বাক্য একটাই, "Task 2 contributes twice as much as Task 1 to the Writing score", এর বেশি কিছু নয়। অঙ্কটা আর rounding-এর নিয়মটা প্রকাশিত নয়, তাই অনুপাতটাকে সত্যি ধরুন আর যেকোনো ফর্মুলাকে কারো নিজের কষা হিসাব ধরুন। প্রতি criterion-এ ২৫% বলে যে হিসাবটা সবাই উদ্ধৃত করে, সেটাও একই জিনিস: "weighted equally" কথাটাকেই অন্যভাবে বলা, official সংখ্যা কখনোই নয়। band যদি Task 2-তেই গলে বেরিয়ে যাচ্ছে বলে মনে হয়, তাহলে পরের লেখাটা পড়ুন — band 6 আর band 7-এর criterion ধরে ধরে তুলনা।

IELTS Writing Task 1 word count: ১৫০ শব্দের কম লিখলে কী হয়

প্রশ্নপত্রে লেখা "Write at least 150 words."। গোনার ব্যাপারে প্রকাশিত একটাই কঠিন নিয়ম কোথাও পাওয়া যায়: "Responses of 20 words or fewer are rated at Band 1."। স্বয়ংক্রিয় Band 5 নেই, প্রতি ২০ শব্দ কম পড়লে এক band কাটা নেই, সর্বোচ্চ সীমাও নেই। ছোট script কেন খারাপ করে তার official ব্যাখ্যাটা মোটেই চমকপ্রদ নয়: উত্তর বেশি ছোট হলে উঁচু band দেওয়ার জন্য যে ভাষাগত বৈশিষ্ট্যগুলো দরকার, সেগুলোর যথেষ্ট প্রমাণই script-এ থাকে না।

bullet point পুরো আলাদা ব্যাপার, আর এটা প্রায় কেউ বলে না। script "may be penalised if they are a) partly or wholly plagiarised, b) not written as full, connected text (e.g. using bullet points in any part of the response, or note form, is not appropriate)."। উত্তরের যেকোনো অংশে। শেষ তিন মিনিটে একটা ছোট বাজে বাক্যও একটা পরিপাটি ড্যাশের চেয়ে ভালো।

২০ মিনিট, আর যে স্ক্রিন আপনার হয়ে গুনে দেয়

একই rubric-এ লেখা "You should spend about 20 minutes on this task", আর ielts.org-এর format পৃষ্ঠায় সেটাই লেখা "no more than 20 minutes" হিসেবে। আমি প্রশ্নপত্রের ভাষাটাই শেখাই, কারণ যে task আপনি ১৪ মিনিটে শেষ করে ফেলতে পারেন কিংবা যার জন্য ২৪ মিনিট লেগে যেতে পারে, তার জন্য about শব্দটাই সৎ।

তারপর আসে স্ক্রিন, যেটা চুপচাপ একটা গোটা ঘরানার পরামর্শকে অবসরে পাঠিয়ে দিয়েছে। computer-delivered IELTS-এ "you can also see the number of words you typed in the lower-left corner", আর "a stopwatch in the upper middle part of the screen" "starts to flash in the last 10 minutes and 5 minutes before reading and writing tests end"। হাতে শব্দ গোনা, প্রতি লাইনে কত শব্দ ধরে আন্দাজ করা, যোগ করার জন্য চার মিনিট আলাদা রেখে দেওয়া — এসব কাগজের যুগের পরামর্শ, আর বাংলাদেশে কাগজ আর নেই। IDP Bangladesh বলছে paper-based test "will no longer be offered in Bangladesh after 31st January 2026"; আর সারা পৃথিবীর জন্য ৫ মার্চ ২০২৬-এ প্রকাশিত অবস্থান ছিল "from mid-2026, we will no longer offer IELTS as a paper-based test", সঙ্গে "exact timelines will vary by market"। এই পরিবর্তনটা এখনো চলমান, তাই কোথাও paper seat আছে ধরে নেওয়ার আগে নিজের market-এর জন্য ielts.org দেখে নিন।

স্ক্রিনে চলে আসায় marking বদলায়নি: "The task types, scoring and time allocation of the Writing component are the same whether it is taken on computer or on paper."। mid-2026 থেকে "selected markets"-এ একটা "Writing on Paper" সুবিধার ঘোষণা এসেছে, আর এই লেখা যাচাই করার সময় পর্যন্ত কোনো official পৃষ্ঠায় বাংলাদেশের নাম ওই তালিকায় নেই।

Fee-র হিসাবটা coaching site-গুলোর আরেকটা বাসি জিনিস। ১১ সেপ্টেম্বর ২০২৬-এ যাচাই করা: IDP Bangladesh IELTS on Computer-এর দাম দেখাচ্ছে BDT 29,600, আর British Council, Luminedge Bangladesh-এর জন্য ielts.org-এর listing দেখাচ্ছে BDT 28,450। দুই provider-এর দাম এক নয় — এই কথাটা কেউ বলে না — আর দ্বিতীয় সংখ্যাটা এসেছে ielts.org-এর centre listing থেকে, British Council-এর নিজের বাংলাদেশ পৃষ্ঠা থেকে নয়। বাজেট করার আগে ওখানে গিয়ে দেখে নিন।

আমাদের Writing paper পড়েন একজন মানুষ, একজন instructor, যিনি চারটি criteria আলাদা করে নম্বর দেন আর প্রতিটার পাশে এক লাইন করে লেখেন — ফলে বুঝতে পারেন overview আপনার নম্বরের কোন চার ভাগের এক ভাগটা খাচ্ছিল। ২১ সেট পুরো past paper, আর স্ক্রিনটা computer-delivered test-এর সঙ্গে মিলিয়ে বানানো। Speaking-ও একইভাবে একজন instructor দেখেন, আপনার উত্তরের রেকর্ডিং শুনে। British Council, IDP বা Cambridge-এর সঙ্গে আমাদের কোনো সম্পর্ক নেই, আর Cambridge-এর সব paper free।

একটাই অভ্যাস। পুরো visual-টা পড়ুন, overview লিখুন, তারপর body শুরু করুন। আগে লিখলে ওটা সারাংশ হয়। শেষ ৯০ সেকেন্ডে লিখলে ওটা সাধারণত conclusion-ই, গায়ে শুধু overview-এর লেবেল সাঁটা।
