What the tasks are

Task 1
Academic: describe a graph, table, chart or diagram. General Training: write a letter. Minimum 150 words, about 20 minutes.
Task 2
Discuss a point of view, argument or problem. Minimum 250 words, about 40 minutes. Counts twice as much as Task 1.
Marked on
Task Achievement or Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy — four criteria of equal weight.
There is no question-by-question table for this paper, and nothing is missing: Writing and Speaking are not marked against an answer key at all. They are scored on four published criteria — the same four the examiner uses — so what is worth knowing beforehand is the shape of the tasks, which IELTS publishes and which is the same in every book.
